The International Society for Extremophiles (ISE) was founded at the initiative of the members of the Editorial Board of the Extremophiles Journal in 2002. The ISE is intended to be a forum for the exchange of information and experience in the rapidly growing field of research on extremophiles. The main objectives of the society comprise:

  • Support of scientists who dedicate their research to the investigation
of extremophilic microorganisms and their enzymes for basic
    and applied research
  • Creating benefits for the ISE members including reduced subscription
fees for the Extremophiles Journal which is the official journal of the ISE
  • Support of the local organizers of the biennial Extremophiles Conferences
  • Scholarships and travel grants for young scientists

Prof. Koki Horikoshi (JAMSTEC, Japan ), chief editor of the Extremophiles Journal, was the founding president of ISE. He was supported by the vice president. Professor Garabed Antranikian (Hamburg University of Technology, Germany) was appointed as the second President of ISE in 2004, and the ISE organization was transferred to Hamburg , Germany.
